Hello Rosemary! Thank you for the question.

Flaxseed is rich in two components relevant here: ALA (its omega-3 fat) and lignans (a type of phytoestrogen). Studies suggest ALA may support bone health, particularly by reducing the inflammation that contributes to bone breakdown. Some research regarding Lignans shows a mild supportive effect, especially in postmenopausal women, while other studies find little effect either way. Importantly, we found no credible studies showing flaxseed actively weakens bone or worsens osteoporosis. One human trial in postmenopausal women specifically found flaxseed improved cholesterol levels without negatively affecting any markers of bone metabolism.

It’s possible the claim you read stemmed from confusion about phytoestrogens in general, since some people worry that anything estrogen-like must be harmful. But research on flax lignans specifically shows they’re weak and generally neutral to mildly protective for bone, not something that breaks bone down.

If you have osteoporosis or are at high risk, the biggest levers for bone health remain adequate calcium and vitamin D, weight-bearing exercise, and adequate protein, and flaxseed doesn’t appear to work against any of that.

If you’d like, this is also a great specific question to bring to your doctor or a registered dietitian, especially if you’re managing osteoporosis directly, since they can look at your full picture and confirm nothing else is at play for you personally. –Ina, Food Revolution Network Team

I’m wondering if nutritional value is maintained, and how it tastes

My organic breakfast starts with 2tsp of soaked chia seeds, then 2tsp of freshly ground golden Flax, (but may change back to brown after reading your article,) then 2tsp of hemp seed, then add 2tbl Sunbutter and 1tbl of fruit spread. This paste is spread on 2 toasted red rice & Quinoa brown rice cakes. Any suggestions?

I’m hoping I can find more ways for my husband to use it to better control his Type 2 Diabetes.
