I advocated for early (age 57) bone density DXA testing which my OB-Gyn agreed with. Showed osteopenia. Hope guidelines change for earlier than age 65 testing.

Hello Susan! Lentil soup may be a bit of a rough pairing since the flavor of the Bone Vitality can clash with savory dishes. Some members have found it helpful to stir it into a strong flavored smoothie with frozen banana, berries, and plant milk, since the sweetness can help. Oatmeal or overnight chia pudding can also work as a carrier. Some people also find it easier to tolerate mixed into a small amount of liquid on its own, taken quickly, rather than blended into a full meal they want to enjoy. If none of that helps, please contact COMPLEMENT’s team at team@lovecomplement.com as they may be able to help you further with flavor and mixing suggestions. –Ina, Food Revolution Network Team

I got more when I bought the supplements. Plus, it tastes horrible. I bought 3 months worth, but it will last me only 6 weeks, as I need to double up. Since I am 72 and have always been active, I was surprised that I still tested osteoporotic in my hips and osteopenic in my spine. I’d be willing to continue the subscription if it just was palatable. Mercy! I stirred my first dose yesterday into my lentil soup but it ruined it for me. Help!

Hi Lucia!Thank you for your question, and it is one that comes up a lot, especially with all the marketing around collagen these days.

Collagen supplements are probably not necessary if you are eating a well-rounded whole food, plant-based diet, and here is why.

Your body makes its own collagen, and the primary building blocks it needs to do that are vitamin C, amino acids from protein, zinc, and copper, all of which are readily available from plant foods. Whole foods rich in vitamin C, along with protein-rich legumes, nuts, and seeds, support your body’s natural collagen production without needing to take it as a supplement.

As for collagen supplements themselves, the research is mixed. Some studies show modest benefits for skin elasticity and joint comfort, but the evidence is not yet strong enough to call it a must-have. When you take collagen as a supplement, your body breaks it down into amino acids during digestion anyway, just like any other protein, so it does not necessarily go straight to your skin or joints in the way the marketing often implies.

The more reliable and food-first approach is to make sure you are getting plenty of vitamin C from colorful fruits and vegetables, adequate protein from beans, lentils, tofu, nuts, and seeds, and staying well hydrated. Those foundations do more for your collagen production than most supplements on the market.

As always, if you have specific health concerns like your cervical sprain or knee osteoarthritis, it is worth discussing collagen or any supplement with your healthcare provider, as individual needs can vary.

Hello Erin and thank you so much for this feedback!

This is an area where the science is still evolving and where honest debate exists among researchers, and we appreciate you highlighting that the MK-4 evidence base deserves more acknowledgment than it sometimes receives. We will continue to keep an eye on the latest research and learn everything we can. –Ina, Food Revolution Network Team
