Lately since I was feeling pretty confident about my living space I purchased TRADER JOES organic smooth peanut butter several times. It was delicious. However I began to have breathing issues which usually arises when I have been exposed to mold. It did not cross my mind that the peanut butter may have been the culprit as it was organic. I urge anyone affected by mold to rethink eating peanut butter as you may trigger a reaction like mine and need to go back on medication.

Hi Judith, Thank you for this interesting question! Valencia peanuts are one of four main peanut varieties, alongside runner, Virginia, and Spanish, and they do have a few meaningful differences worth knowing.

Where they are grown matters most for safety. Valencia peanuts are grown almost exclusively in the dry, arid climates of New Mexico and West Texas. Since aflatoxin producing mold thrives in humidity, this drier growing environment gives Valencias a generally lower aflatoxin risk compared to peanuts grown in the more humid southeastern states, where most runner peanuts, the type used in most commercial peanut butter, are grown.

Nutritionally, Valencias hold their own well. They contain a similar overall profile of healthy fats, protein, and fiber as other peanuts, along with vitamin E, niacin, and folate. Their distinctive red skin also appears to carry a meaningfully higher amount of certain antioxidant compounds, including p coumaric acid, compared to runner peanuts, along with the resveratrol like compounds found in peanut skins generally.

They are also naturally sweeter than other varieties, which is part of why they are commonly used in all natural and organic peanut butter, since that sweetness reduces the need for any added sugar.

So to directly answer your question, yes, there is a real, meaningful difference. Valencia peanuts offer a lower aflatoxin risk due to their arid growing region, along with a somewhat richer antioxidant profile from their skin, making them a genuinely favorable choice if you can find them, particularly in organic, all natural peanut butter. –Ina, Food Revolution Network Team

Hello Frances! Thank you for this question, it’s a great one to round out everything we’ve covered on nut butters.

Here is the short comparison, assuming all are organic with just the nut and maybe salt, nothing else added.
Peanut butter, technically a legume, has the most protein and fiber of the group, along with resveratrol, but comes with the lectin and legume category considerations we’ve discussed, plus a somewhat higher aflatoxin risk profile than tree nuts.

Almond butter is a strong all around choice. It has more calcium, vitamin E, and magnesium than peanut or cashew butter, along with a healthy fat profile similar to olive oil. It sits in the middle for protein, a bit less than peanut butter, but more than cashew.

Cashew butter, as we discussed, is lower in protein and fiber than the other two, but is milder tasting and lower in aflatoxin risk. It’s a nice option for variety, especially if you’re following an autoimmune protocol.

Walnut butter, if you come across it, stands out for omega 3 fatty acids, though it’s less common and pricier.

Honestly, none of them is definitively “best.” Each brings something different to the table, and our experts consistently emphasize that eating a wide variety of plants and nuts, rather than relying on just one, is what supports the healthiest gut microbiome and overall nutrient intake. Rotating between peanut, almond, and cashew butter, all organic and additive free like you already choose, is a great practical approach. –Ina, Food Revolution Network Team
