I’m surprised you’re ok with any kind of plastic in the microwave. Nano plastic particles are an extremely big concern now, and even been found in remote cave in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks for this article, it made a lot of sense.

Just an anecdote, but my mom used to microwave leftovers on plastic plates – maybe “microwave safe” ones (maybe?), but she continued even long after they were blistered and warped. She even microwaved in reused plastic containers like butter tubs, also until those were blistered. I finally had to throw them away when she wasn’t home to get her to stop using them. I can’t claim this was the direct cause, but she had cancer three times, including a rare tongue cancer, and now has Alzheimer’s. It couldn’t have helped. I can’t help but shutter when I think about those 80s “cornflower blue” blistered plastic plates.

We use microwave a lot, and enjoy doing so, however to have microwave safe containers is another story. We use glass whenever available, and don’t cook meals
in it. Sweet potatoes in their raw unpeeled self come out great, no need to use sugar or butter for flavoring.

What a clear well done explanation of the tricky “microwave” subject. So many people have heard about potential cooking issues with it. Your clarity and simple explanations make it clear – microwaves are very useful and don’t cause a loss of nutrients (except maybe meat issues with long cooking times).Thanks for the valuable explanation. I do recommend people not stand near a microwave while
cooking in case there is any leakage of microwaves, but that’s a different subject.

As with anything harmful but hugely profitable the industry is insuring the articles that ”debunk” the negative consequences and praise the “advantages” of their product come up first in the search engines. Googling for example “are microwave ovens safe” brings up lots of positive “information” by ”trustworthy” sources. Many good people fall for the deception.
The sad reality of capitalism.

Great article, thanks. I use pyrex glass covered with a piece of wax paper to reheat things. Is wax paper unsafe?
