Why is it important to get a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables in your diet?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be tempted to find a few foods you or your kids or family members like and focus on eating those. And it can be easy to fall into routines. But the truth is: Our bodies thrive on variety \u2014 a rainbow of nutrients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, <\/span><b>the variety of vitamins, minerals, <a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/what-are-antioxidants\/\">antioxidants<\/a>, and phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables may be more powerful for your health than any pill.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating a diversity of colorful foods can be an easy way to get the complete range of nutrients your body needs to thrive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Eating the Rainbow Is Important for Everyone \u2014 Kids and Adults!<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A varied, balanced diet gives your body the nutrition it needs to work properly. And without good nutrition, your body will be more likely to suffer from disease, illness, and poor performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advice to eat the rainbow is often used with kids. But they may help prevent certain lifestyle diseases and keep your body working as it should.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Most Americans Aren\u2019t Getting the Range of Colorful Foods They Need<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2015 Morbidity and Mortality <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5726245\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weekly Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the CDC states that \u201cthe percentage of the adult population meeting fruit and vegetable intake recommendation is low. In 2013, 13.1% of respondents met fruit intake recommendations and 8.9% met vegetable recommendations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, according to an older 2009<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwrnewmedia.com\/2009\/nutrilite90921nmr\/downloads\/AmerciasPhytonutrientReport.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report about phytonutrients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>8 out of 10 people in the US are falling short in virtually every color category of phytonutrients<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the report:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">69% of Americans are falling short in green phytonutrients<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">78% of Americans are falling short in red phytonutrients<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">86% of Americans are falling short in white phytonutrients<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">88% of Americans are falling short in purple and blue phytonutrients<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">79% of Americans are falling short in yellow and orange phytonutrients<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, let\u2019s take a look at what the color of your food can tell you about its nutrition.
