In contrast, plant protein from vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds is considered a \u201csecond string\u201d source.<\/p>\n<p>But as usual, popular wisdom only gets part of the story right. <b>When it comes to protecting your cardiovascular health, it is the source of your protein that matters most.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Many studies have demonstrated that <b>plant protein is beneficial \u2013 and animal protein is harmful <\/b><i>\u2013 regarding outcomes such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and death from all causes.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>But new data gathered by the Adventist Health Study 2 takes a more nuanced look at exactly which types of plant and animal proteins have the greatest impact on your risk of heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers decided to ask which protein-containing foods, in particular, contribute to increasing or decreasing cardiovascular risk. A total of 81,337 participants were asked about their usual intake of these foods during the previous year, and then they were followed for 6-12 years. Data was analyzed to determine the percentage of total protein that came from these animal and plant sources.<\/p>\n<p>Of all the plant and animal protein sources analyzed, <b>the risk of cardiovascular deaths steadily climbed with higher consumption of meat protein and steadily fell with greater consumption of protein from nuts and seeds.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In the groups with the highest meat intake, the risk was about 60% higher than in the group with the lowest intake. <i>In the group with the highest intake of nuts and seeds, the cardiovascular risk was about 40% lower<\/i> compared to the group with the lowest intake of nuts and seeds.<\/p>\n<p>These results are consistent with previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20713902\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research<\/a> that has compared <a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/nuts-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nuts<\/a> to meat as a major calorie source. Plus there have now been numerous studies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25833976\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">linking<\/a> higher nut intake to longevity.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Is Meat So Harmful to the Cardiovascular System?<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"list-item-margin\">\n<li>Meat is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15281050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high<\/a> in Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs), which <b>contribute to vascular damage, <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16894049\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>especially<\/b><\/a><b> in people with diabetes.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Meat is <b>high in heme iron<\/b>, which has pro-oxidant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17259340\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">effects<\/a> that promote cardiovascular disease.<\/li>\n<li>Meat contains <b>pro-inflammatory components<\/b> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22613931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">arachidonic acid<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19056664\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">saturated fat<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3650111\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">carnitine<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Meat consumption (and animal protein consumption in general) is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21802560\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>associated<\/b><\/a><b> with <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16534521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>weight gain<\/b><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Meat <b>promotes the growth of unfavorable bacteria<\/b> that lead to the production of TMAO, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3650111\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inflames<\/a> the endothelium and promotes atherosclerosis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to cardiovascular disease, <b>diets high in animal protein also promote cancer.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Animal protein, which has a higher biological value (compared to plant protein) because of its greater essential amino acid content, is absorbed and utilized quickly by the body. This raises IGF-1 to dangerous levels, which <b>promotes the growth of tumors and enhances fat storage.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>Why Are Nuts and Seeds So Protective?<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29165404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>rich<\/b><\/a><b> in a variety of heart-healthy nutrients<\/b>: potassium, magnesium, fiber, plant sterols, tocopherols (vitamin E), flavonoids and other polyphenols.<\/li>\n<li>They have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26561616\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shown<\/a> to <b>reduce total and LDL cholesterol.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>The fat-binding fibers are not absorbed, carrying fat into the stool and toilet.<\/li>\n<li>They are <b>highly satiating<\/b>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24898229\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">promoting<\/a> a healthy weight.<\/li>\n<li>Nuts are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20199999\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rich<\/a> in arginine and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19581495\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">glutamic acid<\/a>, which aid in the production of nitric oxide and are important for <b>maintaining favorable <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/lower-blood-pressure-naturally\/\"><b>blood pressure<\/b><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29165404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>promote<\/b><\/a><b> favorable blood glucose levels <\/b>in studies on patients with type 2 <a
