Or Epsom salt baths and megadoses of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/why-daily-vitamin-c-is-good-for-your-immune-system\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of these ideas can have value. <\/span><b>But before you spend a lot of money and effort detoxing your body, the first thing to do is stop bringing toxins into it in the first place. And the place to start is with the food on your plate.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What? We\u2019re getting toxins in our food?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh my goodness, yes. As I write this, we\u2019re consuming the most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12442484\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chemical-laden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> food in the history of humanity. (And, not by coincidence, the most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7750273\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">addictive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sheer number of food additives in use today is staggering. And the disturbing reality is that many of them <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/research\/secret-gras-how-100-food-chemicals-bypassed-government-safety-review\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> declared safe only by the companies that make them \u2014 without any testing or oversight by government agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 800;\">How Your Body Detoxes Naturally (and Brilliantly)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that your body can already deal with toxins. (Yes, that really is a thing.) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of these approaches has been proven to be helpful in the long run.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 800;\">Key Questions to Ask<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before trying any detox program, it&#8217;s worth asking a few specific questions, since most detox products have research, testimonials, and before-and-after photos. The question is whether any of it holds up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Who is selling this, and what do they gain?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If the person recommending the detox is also selling it, that&#8217;s worth noting. Financial incentives don&#8217;t automatically invalidate a product, but they&#8217;re a reason to look more carefully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What does the evidence actually show?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Testimonials and transformation photos are not evidence; they&#8217;re marketing. Look for peer-reviewed studies in independent journals, not just anecdotal endorsements. Studies funded by the company making the product can be useful to a point. If no such studies exist, proceed with a little more caution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What specifically is being &#8220;detoxed&#8221;?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A credible program should be able to name the toxins it targets and explain the mechanism by which it removes them. Vague claims about &#8220;cleansing&#8221; or &#8220;resetting&#8221; your system without specifics are a red flag.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Does it require you to buy proprietary products?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, and skin are already continuously detoxifying your body. Any program that claims these organs need expensive outside help to function should be approached with some skepticism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What does a doctor or registered dietitian say?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Does a doctor or a dietitian (not a wellness influencer, but an actual clinician) with no financial stake in the product endorse it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The truth is that most of what legitimate detox programs achieve can be attributed to the elimination of processed food, alcohol, and excess sugar \u2014 not to any special supplement or protocol. Eating more whole plants, drinking more water, sleeping well, and moving your body will probably support your body&#8217;s natural detoxification systems more reliably than just about any cleanse on the market.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 800;\">How Detoxifying Foods Can Boost Your Detox Ability<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several specific foods and beverages have been shown to help your body boost its detox power, in addition to providing many other health benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here are eleven of the top ones.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 800;\">1. Avoid these foods.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 800;\">Most Fish<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Most fish flesh contains high levels of chemical residues,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including mercury and synthetic chemicals called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/yellow-book\/hcp\/environmental-hazards-risks\/food-poisoning-from-marine-toxins.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSeafood poisoning from marine toxins is an underrecognized hazard for travelers, particularly in the tropics and subtropics.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And because of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/single-use-plastics-problems\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plastic pollution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the ocean, <\/span><b>almost all fish consume microplastics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that end up in your stomach when you eat them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you choose to eat fish, the least dangerous options for humans (all fish consumption, of course, is lethal for the fish) are low-mercury fish, such as wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, and herring. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/farmed-fish\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read our full article about eating fish here<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 800;\">Meat\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Processed meats (bacon, lunchmeat, hot dogs, etc.) have been classified as <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/hospital-food\/\"><b>carcinogenic<\/b><\/a><b> (cancer-causing) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/features\/qa\/cancer-red-meat\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so it\u2019s likely best to avoid them altogether.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even <\/span><b>unprocessed meats are often <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5620641\/\"><b>contaminated<\/b><\/a><b> with bacteria <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">due to the processes, equipment, and conditions of many farms and slaughterhouses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 800;\">Dairy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cow\u2019s milk contains a whole host of substances, including powerful growth hormones, that can cause health issues in humans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dairy consumption has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/problems-with-dairy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to acne, asthma, heart disease, and many types of cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2011 study <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21469656\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found <\/span><b>up to 20 different chemicals in cow\u2019s milk.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These included the anti-inflammatory drugs niflumic acid, mefenamic acid, and ketoprofen (all used as painkillers in animals and people).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to ditch the dairy, you can opt for plant-based milk, such as cashew, almond, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/the-truth-about-soy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or oat instead. (See a doctor\u2019s thoughts on the healthiest plant-based milk <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/healthiest-plant-based-milk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 800;\">Bioengineered Foods (Also Known as GMOs)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bioengineered food ingredients, also known as genetically modified organisms (GMOs), first hit U.S. grocery store shelves in 1994, and widespread commercial cultivation of GMO crops took hold in the mid-to-late 1990s.<\/span><b> Despite industry claims, studies have found that they have led to<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/10\/02\/us-usa-study-pesticides-idUSBRE89100X20121002\"> <b>higher pesticide use<\/b><\/a><b> and no meaningful improvement in<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebsco.com\/research-starters\/history\/genetically-engineered-food-reaches-supermarkets\"><b> flavor<\/b><\/a><b>,<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicaldaily.com\/nutritional-value-corn-does-gmo-corn-contain-same-nutrients-246496\"> <b>nutrition<\/b><\/a><b>,<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/food_and_agriculture\/our-failing-food-system\/genetic-engineering\/failure-to-yield.html\"> <b>yield<\/b><\/a><b>, or<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jxb\/article\/64\/1\/83\/632975\"><b> water<\/b><\/a><b> consumption.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, what they\u2019ve created are plants that are engineered to withstand <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/2190-4715-24-24\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">massive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dosing of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.1600850\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toxic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> herbicides \u2014 and plants that function as living pesticide factories. Bayer\u2019s Bt corn, for example, is actually<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.epa.gov\/pesticides\/biopesticides\/web\/html\/regofbtcrops.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">registered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the EPA as a pesticide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many credible scientists have significant <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/earthopensource.org\/index.php\/reports\/gmo-myths-and-truths\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concerns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the safety of these crops for human and animal consumption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And <\/span><b>GMO crops are typically contaminated with <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/monsanto-lawsuit-dewayne-johnson\/\"><b>glyphosate<\/b><\/a><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is a probable carcinogen, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19539684\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suspected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> endocrine disruptor, and has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/patents.google.com\/patent\/US7771736B2\/en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patented<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as an antibiotic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The primary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/what-is-a-gmo-bioengineered-food\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GMO foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available in the U.S. are corn, soybeans, canola, sugar beets, papaya, and cottonseed oil.
