{"id":16099,"date":"2019-03-01T10:00:04","date_gmt":"2019-03-01T18:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/?p=16099"},"modified":"2025-07-03T05:42:02","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T12:42:02","slug":"foods-for-brain-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/foods-for-brain-health\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Things to Avoid and 6 Foods to Eat to Help Prevent Alzheimer\u2019s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Neal Barnard, MD \u2022 A version of this article was originally published in <a href=\"https:\/\/nakedfoodmagazine.com\/can-we-end-alzheimers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Naked Food Magazine<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Alzheimer\u2019s disease is the fastest-growing health threat in the United States<\/b>, according to a 2013 landmark report from researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Prevent Alzheimer\u2019s and Fight Memory Loss with Diet and Lifestyle Changes<\/h2>\n<p>The latest scientific findings show that <b>diet and lifestyle changes can create a barrier against cognitive decline<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the Chicago Health and Aging Project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3393525\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">analyzed<\/a> the diets of thousands of people over many years. The findings are groundbreaking.<\/p>\n<p><b>Saturated \u201cbad\u201d fat \u2014 found in <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/problems-with-dairy\/\"><b>milk, cheese<\/b><\/a><b>, and <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/does-meat-cause-inflammation\/\"><b>meat<\/b><\/a> \u2014<b> is strongly linked to the risk of developing Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/b>, increasing risk more than threefold. Trans fats increase risk fivefold. Avoiding these fats can cut risk dramatically.<\/p>\n<p><b>Foods rich in vitamin E<\/b>, such as broccoli, walnuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds, also <b>reduced dementia risk by as much as 70%<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Other studies show that <b>foods overly rich in <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/iron-rich-foods\/\"><b>iron<\/b><\/a><b> or copper can promote cognitive loss<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>And also that <b>folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 may help protect the memory<\/b>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16103\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16103\" style=\"width: 1999px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16103\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.foodrevolution.org\/cdn-cgi\/image\/quality=75,format=auto\/foodrevolution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/iStock-670671832-1.jpg\" alt=\"Nuts and seeds in spoons and on a table\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.foodrevolution.org\/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=1999,quality=75,format=auto\/foodrevolution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/iStock-670671832-1.jpg 1999w, https:\/\/cdn.foodrevolution.org\/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=300,quality=75,format=auto\/foodrevolution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/iStock-670671832-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.foodrevolution.org\/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=1024,quality=75,format=auto\/foodrevolution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/iStock-670671832-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.foodrevolution.org\/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=768,quality=75,format=auto\/foodrevolution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/iStock-670671832-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.foodrevolution.org\/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=1536,quality=75,format=auto\/foodrevolution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/iStock-670671832-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cdn.foodrevolution.org\/cdn-cgi\/image\/width=700,quality=75,format=auto\/foodrevolution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/iStock-670671832-1-700x525.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1999px) 100vw, 1999px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16103\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">iStock.com\/kerdkanno<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><i>This brain-healthy diet is almost identical to the diet that helps prevent <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/food-and-health\/best-and-worst-foods-to-prevent-stroke\/\"><i>stroke<\/i><\/a><i>, <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/heart-healthy-foods\/\"><i>heart disease<\/i><\/a><i>, obesity, and other chronic diseases<\/i>: a low-fat diet of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes.<\/p>\n<p>Combining this with <b>physical and mental exercise and avoiding harmful toxins<\/b>, such as aluminum in supplements or cookware, can maximize protection for the brain.<\/p>\n<h2>5 Things That Threaten Your Brain Health<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"list-item-margin\">\n<li><b>Saturated fats found in meats, dairy products, and eggs appear to encourage the production of beta-amyloid plaques within the brain<\/b>. The Chicago Health and Aging Study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12580703\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> in the <i>Archives of Neurology<\/i> in 2003 that people consuming the most saturated fat had more than triple the risk of developing Alzheimer\u2019s disease, compared with people who generally avoided these foods.<\/li>\n<li><b>Aluminum has been found in the brains of Alzheimer\u2019s patients<\/b>, so it pays to err on the side of caution. Avoid uncoated aluminum cookware and read labels when buying baking powder, antacids, and processed foods.<\/li>\n<li><b>Excess copper impairs cognition<\/b> \u2014 even in mid-adulthood \u2014 and ends up in the plaques of Alzheimer\u2019s disease. It comes from copper pipes and nutritional supplements.<\/li>\n<li><b>Excess <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/iron-rich-foods\/\"><b>iron<\/b><\/a><b> can build up in the brain, sparking the production of damaging free radicals<\/b>. Sources of excess iron include cast-iron cookware, meats, and iron supplements.<\/li>\n<li><b>Trans fats, found in doughnuts and snack pastries, have been shown to increase Alzheimer\u2019s risk more than fivefold<\/b>. While many people have trouble absorbing vitamin B12 from foods, B12 in supplements is highly absorbable. Together, folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 eliminate homocysteine, which can build up in the bloodstream \u2014 rather like factory waste \u2014 and damage the brain.<\/li>\n<li><b>Blueberries and grapes <\/b>get their deep colors from anthocyanins, which are powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/what-are-antioxidants\/\">antioxidants<\/a> shown to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20047325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">improve<\/a> learning and recall in studies at the University of Cincinnati.<\/li>\n<li><b>Beans and chickpeas<\/b> have vitamin B6 and folate, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/plant-based-protein\/\">protein<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/calcium-rich-foods\/\">calcium<\/a>, with no saturated fat or trans fat.<\/li>\n<li><b>Sweet potatoes<\/b> are the dietary staple of Okinawans, the longest-lived people on Earth, who are also known for maintaining mental clarity into old age. <a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/sweet-potato-health-benefits\/\">Sweet potatoes<\/a> are extremely rich in beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant.<\/li>\n<li><b>Nuts and seeds <\/b>are rich in vitamin E, which has been shown to help prevent Alzheimer\u2019s disease. Especially good sources are almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, pine nuts, pecans, pistachios, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, and <a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/health-benefits-flaxseed\/\">flaxseed<\/a>. Just 1 ounce \u2014 a small handful \u2014 each day is plenty.<\/li>\n<li><b>Green leafy vegetables<\/b> provide iron in a form that is more absorbable when the body needs more and less absorbable when you already have plenty, protecting you from iron overload which can harm the brain. Green vegetables are also loaded with folate, an important, brain-protecting B-vitamin.
