Evidence suggests that people in the Middle East and North Africa have been eating dates for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2017\/05\/08\/526785250\/a-love-affair-with-dates-the-fruit-at-the-cultural-heart-of-oman\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 6,000 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re such a central part of some cultures that dates are offered at important social events and are sometimes referred to as \u201cthe fruit of heaven.\u201d The Prophet Muhammad <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/arts-culture\/why-date-is-so-important-to-muslim-world-180962011\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his followers to eat seven dates a day to protect against poison and witchcraft. And across the world\u2019s Muslim population, worshippers consume the fruits to break their fast each evening during the holy month of Ramadan. <\/span><b>Dates are also known as \u201cthe fruit of kings,\u201d as they were originally <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medjooldays.com\/blogs\/health\/medjool-dates-origins\"><b>eaten by royalty<\/b><\/a><b> and thought to fend off fatigue.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, many plant-based eaters think of dates as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodrevolution.org\/blog\/sugar-substitutes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whole food sweetener<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Their sticky consistency and high sugar content make them an effective sugar substitute. But when something tastes that good, is there a catch? Are dates actually good for us and the environment? The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodprint.org\/real-food\/dates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scientific name<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refers to the plant\u2019s ability to spring to life from the desert&#8217;s searing heat, like its mythological namesake bird, the phoenix, which rises from the ashes to live again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The date is a one-seeded fruit (also known as a drupe), like a peach or nectarine. Typically oblong, dates can vary significantly in shape, size, color, quality, and consistency of flesh. Dates that are ready to eat are generally brownish in color, and their taste depends on their ripeness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Date palms are native to the Persian Gulf area of the Middle East, but they are also grown in many other warm or tropical climates. Egypt is the world\u2019s largest producer of dates, followed by Iran, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The two most widely grown in the United States are the Deglet Noor and the Medjool.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other types of dates enjoyed around the world include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Safawi\/Kalmi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are darker-colored dates with a potent taste. They\u2019re more resistant to damage than other varieties.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ajwa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are small, black dates with a sweet, fruity taste. They\u2019re considered luxury dates and among the most expensive.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sukkary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dates are often described as \u201csugary,\u201d with a blonde color and a fresh, sweet pulp.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mabroom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dates have a subtler, less sweet flavor than other varieties. They also have a slender, firmer shape.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Khudri<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dates tend to have a uniform dark brown color and fewer wrinkles than other varieties.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sagai<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are very soft dates with a unique combination of crunchiness and softness.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Barhi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dates are soft, creamy, and known to have a flavor similar to butterscotch candy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Thoori<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dates are also called \u201cbread dates\u201d and are considered one of the oldest foods in history, if not the first food ever cultivated by humans. They have a peanut-like flavor and a firm, pastry-like texture.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking to taste some of these varieties for yourself? Generally, yes! And far more so than most people think.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dates of all varieties boast a compelling nutritional profile. For starters, dates are a good source of several micronutrients, including vitamin A, iron, potassium, calcium, manganese, copper, and magnesium. They\u2019re also high in dietary fiber and carbohydrates, with a single date containing nearly two grams and 18 grams, respectively. They\u2019re also very energy-dense, with Medjool dates providing around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ayoubs.ca\/blogs\/news\/medjool-dates-calories\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70 calories each<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dates are also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/date-fruit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rich in antioxidants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They contain many classes of bioactive plant compounds, including carotenoids, polyphenols, isoflavones, lignans, flavonoids, tannins, and sterols.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given how incredibly sweet they are (even to folks who consume a lot of refined sugar), you might expect eating a date to send your blood sugar through the roof. But surprise: Dates have a low <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19056599\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glycemic load<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3112406\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testing 5 date varieties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found glycemic index values ranging from roughly 44 to 55 (solidly in the low GI range) in both healthy people and people with type 2 diabetes. Blood sugar response was similar between the two groups, suggesting that dates, in moderate amounts as part of a balanced diet, may be appropriate for people managing diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 800;\">Benefits of Dates<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to being naturally sweet and nutritious, dates offer a range of benefits for your health and the environment. Dates may support a healthy pregnancy and breastfeeding<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not sure how they came up with the idea, but apparently, some researchers woke up one day and thought, \u201cCan dates speed up labor in women expecting their first child?\u201d Actually, the question makes sense when you consider that giving birth is pretty much the most grueling endurance sport there is. Triathletes consume energy gels, bars, and drinks during their races, but so far, nobody has marketed \u201cBirth Bars\u201d to women in labor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29033994\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Iranian researchers found that 91 women who consumed dates late in their pregnancy, beginning in the 37th week, experienced shorter labor and a reduced need for oxytocin to accelerate labor. The benefits were seen after eating the equivalent of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/fdc-app.html#\/food-details\/1102631\/nutrients\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eight to nine dates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A similar study found that women who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21280989\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consumed dates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> daily for four weeks toward the end of their pregnancy were much more likely to experience spontaneous labor. (\u201cSpontaneous\u201d here means labor wasn\u2019t induced by drugs like oxytocin and prostaglandin or via c-section; not that the baby came out prior to full-term or emerged doing an improv set.) The date-eating mothers also had a significantly higher mean cervical dilatation (3.5 cm vs. 2 cm) upon admission compared to women who did not eat dates. And check out the difference in length of the first stage of delivery between the date eaters and the controls: 8.5 vs. 15.1 hours. That\u2019s almost the entire first season of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bridgerton<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dates have also been shown to help <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34252286\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase breast milk quantity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in breastfeeding mothers. A randomized controlled trial published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastfeeding Medicine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that consuming 10 dates per day for four weeks led to a significant increase in breast milk volume.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 800;\">2. Dates may support women\u2019s health across the lifespan<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefits of dates for women extend well beyond pregnancy. A 2025 systematic review of 21 studies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12244291\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that dates support women&#8217;s health across multiple life stages, from hormonal balance and improved ovulation in women with PCOS, to improvements in sexual function and performance in postmenopausal women. Few foods have been studied across such a wide range of women&#8217;s health outcomes, which makes dates worth knowing about at every stage of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 800; color: revert; font-size: 1.5rem;\">3. Dates may protect your heart health<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19681613\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2009 comparative study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> examined the effects of eating Medjool and Hawaiian dates on heart health biomarkers. The authors found that eating 100 grams of dates (around 12 dates) per day for 4 weeks, especially Hawaiian types, improved serum triglycerides and oxidative stress. <\/span><b>Despite their high natural sugar content, dates didn\u2019t negatively affect blood sugar levels or blood fats,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leading the authors to conclude they are anti-atherogenic, or helpful in preventing plaque buildup in arteries, which can lead to heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal and in vitro research suggests dates may help reduce high blood pressure and high cholesterol, largely thanks to their potassium content and cholesterol-lowering effects seen in rodent and rabbit studies. Dates are also rich in antioxidant compounds like phenolics and flavonoids, which<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10181018\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may help protect against oxidative stress and inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can harm the heart and overall health \u2014 though human clinical trials confirming these cardiovascular effects are still limited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More recent research <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11755313\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adds some nuance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the cholesterol picture. A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025 meta-analysis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of randomized controlled trials found that date consumption significantly reduced total cholesterol in patients with type 2 diabetes, which is good news for heart health. The effects on LDL (&#8220;bad&#8221;) cholesterol, HDL (&#8220;good&#8221;) cholesterol, and triglycerides were not significant, suggesting that while dates show promise, they&#8217;re not a magic bullet for full lipid panel improvement. As with most whole foods, they work best as part of an overall heart-healthy diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 800;\">4. Dates may support healthy blood sugar management<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2304-8158\/9\/11\/1557\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foods <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discusses how dates contain antioxidant compounds that support healthy insulin sensitivity and blood glucose control, which can be beneficial for people with diabetes. Other research suggests that, despite their sweetness, dates contain compounds that can be helpful in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11229973\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nutritional management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of diabetes and other insulin-resistant conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 800;\">5. Dates may protect against toxins and carcinogens<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lab study has <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10068-014-0118-0\">shown<\/a> that date flesh extract can help prevent chemically induced cellular mutations. Other studies have found that the antioxidants in dates can fight <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11804538\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free radicals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that cause oxidative damage, which can lead to cancer.
