More and more pesticides have been used because they &#8220;contribute to higher yields and improved product quality by controlling weeds, insects, nematodes, and plant pathogens,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/webdocs\/publications\/43854\/46736_eib124_summary.pdf?v=0\">according to the US Department of Agriculture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the USDA noted, pesticides pose consequences for people&#8217;s health and the environment.<\/p>\n<p><i>[Read More: <\/i><a href=\"\/blog\/pesticides-risks\/\"><i>Using Pesticides to Grow Food Is Harming Farmworkers and Children \u2014 And These Risks Are Being Ignored<\/i><\/a><i>]<\/i><\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-uk7zx\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" title=\"Hazardous pesticides that are banned in many countries are still used in the United States\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/uk7zx\/18\/\" height=\"662\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"chart\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>About 150 agricultural pesticides that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789241547963\">the World Health Organization considers<\/a> &#8220;hazardous&#8221; at some level to human health were used in the United States in 2017<\/strong>, according to a review of <a href=\"https:\/\/water.usgs.gov\/nawqa\/pnsp\/usage\/maps\/county-level\/\">US Geological Survey data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The geological survey estimated that at least one billion pounds of agricultural pesticides were used in 2017. Of that, about 60 percent \u2014 or more than 645 million pounds \u2014 of the pesticides were hazardous to human health, according to the WHO&#8217;s data.<\/p>\n<p>Many &#8220;hazardous&#8221; pesticides that have been used in the US for decades are banned in many other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-five pesticides that are banned in more than 30 countries were still used in the United States in 2017, according to an analysis of data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/water.usgs.gov\/nawqa\/pnsp\/usage\/maps\/county-level\/\">US Geological Survey<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/pan-international.org\/pan-international-consolidated-list-of-banned-pesticides\/\">Pesticide Action Network International<\/a>, which keeps track of banned pesticides around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The action network\u2019s data show that about <strong>70 of the 150 hazardous pesticides used in the US are banned in at least one country<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, phorate, the most used &#8220;extremely hazardous&#8221; insecticide in the US in 2017, is banned in 38 countries, including China, Brazil, and India.
